A Juggler's Tale is interesting in that it is one of the few games that use puppets as a theme and the main line of the story. The main plot unfolds in a puppet show in a bar, where the puppet master Jack tells the story of Abby, a juggler in a cage who escapes from the circus. Shortly after her escape, the ringmaster hires a group of bandits to track down Abby, led by the particularly persistent Tonda. As you progress through the five chapters of the game, you will have to participate in minor tricks, successive chases and puzzles to find out what it means to be free. While A Juggler's Tale is nominally a platformer, it's first and foremost a series of puzzles strung together. They're simple but enjoyable. For example, throwing a ball at a metal object to attract a guard's attention, allowing the player to steal a key hanging from his belt. Others require clearing obstacles so you can move around without tangling your strings, such as setting tree branches on fire or manipulating windmills. The gameplay is generally less intense than most puzzle platformers, which suits the playful, childlike aesthetic and folkloric soundtrack. There are a few darker turns, and it's easy enough to die in certain stages, which require experimentation to complete. But overall, the experience is enjoyable and forgiving - even the puppet master occasionally helps out by pulling strings to nearby ledges. However, it is better to play slowly. Many locations offer stunning backdrops, from lush rural fields at sunset to rainy swamps at night – all rich in color and impressive lighting effects. The relaxed approach is also probably commended because the adventure is very short – only two hours of play. There is enough visual and gameplay variety to make the journey satisfying, but the serious lack of replayability is forgivable, as the game does not offer any incentives such as collectibles or new challenges.
