A Story Beside takes you to a fictional medieval town called Pierside, which stands right on a major trade route. Because of its location, the settlement is often visited by travelers - from the great knights battling dragons to common merchants searching for a way to the East to get their hands on the coveted spices. Unlike many adventure games, the protagonist will not need to fight, kill monsters, and sleep the world from evil forces. Lyric is not a plucky heroine with a sword and shining armor.

The protagonist of A Story Beside is an ordinary girl from the village who works at the local inn and meets interesting people daily. One way or another, through her routine, she affects the lives of every resident and the entire future fate of the town of Pierside. The gamer is allowed to move from the open virtual world, which consists of the settlement itself and its surroundings. Lyric's main weapons are dialogue and running small routine errands.

The girl is able to communicate with every character she meets on the map. Some will simply tell their interesting story, while others will be asked to help with simple tasks like bringing food to the elderly, or feeding a weary traveler who is on his way to an ancient ruin where evil spirits have risen. Each such episode can be passed in two ways - help or refuse, if there is a suspicion that the stranger's intentions are impure. Some actions have very long-lasting consequences that will affect the universe only a few years later.
