In Blitz: The League, Midway Games has created a world separate from the NFL, immersing itself in the realm of a fictional league. In this alternate universe, 18 teams divided into three divisions offer a parallel narrative of the NFL history. The campaign revives the intense and aggressive process of the series. The core mechanics retain the signature ferocity of previous versions. It is a heightened, brutal version of gridiron football. There are changes to the rulebook: first downs are 30 yards, eight people on each side, similar to arena football, and no penalties or referees - although somehow players manage to avoid being offside. Violent tackles and aggressive blocking are the norm here, setting a tone far removed from standard American football. In this harsh landscape, the Clash meter is a big deal. Advancing yards, making tackles, scoring points or forcing turnovers feed this meter. After the attack, gamers unleash a flurry of dirty moves, from hard hands to sprints, leaving a deep impact on opponents. Notably, these moves can drain the stamina of opponents, reducing their effectiveness and sometimes causing brutal injuries, clearly visible in broken bones and torn ligaments on X-rays.
