Call of Duty 2: Big Red One immerses players in a first-person shooter set in World War II. Both single-player and multiplayer modes are available. Taking on the role of Roland Roger, a soldier in the US 1st Infantry Division, users begin to complete specific missions. Movement involves crouching, lying on your stomach, and overcoming obstacles such as low walls. Carrying two types of firearms allows for strategic substitutions on the battlefield, as well as grenades for tactical use. Precise aiming is provided by sighting devices. The HUD displays a compass that indicates allies and enemies, as well as markers that lead gamers to objectives or enemy targets. The gameplay provides access to a variety of weapons, including stationary weapons such as machine guns and anti-aircraft guns, strategically placed to destroy enemy forces. Some missions even provide tank control, adding variety to the combat experience. Notably, the mission changes perspective by providing the role of Roger Stretch's brother aboard a US Air Force B-24 Liberator. Here, the process includes the role of a bombardier and gunner, which adds a new layer to the overall gameplay. The setting of World War II is presented, as well as tactical weapons and grenades. The campaign provides a variety of combat scenarios.
