Castle Shikigami 2 builds on its predecessor, No Shiro, expanding the roster of characters according to the five-stage structure of the gameplay. Each stage consists of two parts, culminating in a boss encounter. Dialogue sequences between player characters and these bosses vary, offering unique exchanges for different character combinations. Character weapons play a key role: the Shikigami's primary and secondary weapons are distinguished by pressing or holding specific firing buttons. Secondary weapons, while more powerful, often trade range or utility for power and hinder the character's mobility. These weapons vary greatly between characters, showcasing different patterns and strengths. In addition, each Shikigami operates in one of two modes, selected at the start of the playthrough. Bombs, an available arsenal, also exhibit a variety of functions unique to each character. The sequel differs from the original in that it lacks a weapon upgrade mechanic. Users can participate in five difficulty levels, including an extreme mode where defeated enemies fire additional projectiles. In addition to process improvements, an alternative soundtrack called S2MIX reinterprets the music from the first part. However, the PAL version for PS2 offers a complete replacement of the original soundtrack, citing undisclosed reasons for the change.
