In Castlevania: Lament of Innocence, players guide Leon Belmont through a castle teeming with monsters in search of his kidnapped beloved. The castle offers unlimited exploration with puzzles, hidden objects and difficult bosses. Portals near the entrance lead to five main zones, and all of them are available from the very beginning. As Leon defeats the boss of each area, new parts of the castle open up. To improve stats such as strength and defense, health restorers and items can be purchased with in-game currency from the shop on the castle grounds. Leon's primary weapon, the Alchemist Whip, given to him by shopkeeper Rinaldo, changes throughout the game. He is able to obtain three more elemental whips by defeating bosses, culminating in the powerful Vampire Slayer Whip at the campaign's climax. Combining different sub-weapons and orbs allows for unique special attacks. As Leon progresses, he learns magical attacks and special moves to aid him in his quest. Unlockable characters add depth to the gameplay. Pumpkin, a new character, uses Leon's whip as his primary weapon and boasts pre-learned whip skills and increased damage. Joachim, initially encountered as a boss, uses five flying swords as his main weapon and has excellent magical attacks, but he has no inventory or access to items and relics in the store.
