Space strategy Conquest: Frontier Wars in which the player acts as a Terran military leader who is tasked with investigating a clash with hostile aliens in uncharted space. Soon this escalates into an open war with insect-like creatures - praying mantises, and the rest of the campaign is devoted to combating the threat they pose to the survival of humanity. Along the way, there is an opportunity to meet another alien species called kelareons. Highly intelligent creatures made of pure energy, enclosed in metal shells, they are the sworn enemies of the praying mantises, and therefore your allies. One campaign consists of 16 huge missions, each of which pursues several goals scattered over large territories. The main missions alone often take over three hours to complete. Aside from some subtleties around resource gathering and each side's distinct look, there's little that differentiates the three factions. Both the Mantis and Celareons in Conquest: Frontier Wars have a tech tree that's very similar to the Terran tech tree. Units and buildings are the same in almost every way. Their similarities definitely benefit Conquest's quick-fire skirmish mode and multiplayer. In these, having partners on each side balances the game and ensures that strategic interests are paramount. The campaign itself is one of the most realistic depictions of futuristic warfare. Most importantly, the design team added the need for power supplies. All ships in the game, right down to stationary gun turrets, have limited sources of ammunition and must be reloaded regularly. This is not easy to achieve. Since missions usually pass through numerous planetary systems connected by wormholes, the player needs to establish supply lines. Advancing from one system to another will quickly fizzle out unless jump gates are built around wormholes and new planetary bases are secured. Proper planning and strategic thinking are a must. And cautious advancement is the only way.
