The ultimate goal of each level is to find the elusive purple crystal while overcoming obstacles and reaching the end point. Aku-Aku boxes contain protective masks that provide immunity against one encounter with an enemy. Accumulating three masks in a row makes Crash temporarily invulnerable. Meanwhile, boxes with arrows upwards lift Crash higher into the air, helping him reach hard-to-reach places. In addition, specialized ones change the environment by freezing objects or causing explosions. The mechanics of the process extend to rewarding with gems for carefully destroying boxes, including nitro boxes and alternative route containers. Moreover, achieving certain goals, such as time trials or completing a level without breaking a single box, unlocks additional gems.
