In D.i.R.T.: Origin of the Species, the main character wakes up in a New York prison cell and sees a giant cockroach eating a man. She is a violent rebel dressed in a rather revealing outfit, she has amnesia, which allows her to remember only that her nickname is Dirt. She also has some psychic abilities. A reporter gives the character some clues about a chemical spill in some backwater, and then Dirt leaves, shooting giant bugs and someone like special forces. And you have to do all this with the help of a sentient backpack with a teddy bear named Mr. Boo.The story in DIRT: Origin of the Species is gradually revealed through small hints and cutscenes. You can turn a corner and get a clip of police cars being thrown into the air, or a scene of comic-style dialogue with an anonymous civilian whom the heroine has just saved from death. The level structure doesn't always make sense. One moment the player can be on a ruined New York street, and the next they can walk through a doorway and find themselves in some Victorian mansion with heraldic crests on the wall. The game is colorful enough, but it can feel like the character models lack detail and distinguishable facial features. The gameplay consists of taking out enemies and sometimes having to face half a dozen commandos with submachine guns. In addition to regular weapons, the player has an arsenal of psychic abilities that can be a great help in fights with enemies. For example, a razor blade that grabs and decapitates up to eight bad guys. When using her abilities, the main character freezes in place or pauses after the power runs out, like with a shield, which can leave her open to enemy fire. That is why it is better to carefully monitor the number of opponents and fight wisely.
