Dear Esther Is an exciting adventure game. The action takes place on the Hebride Islands, in particular on one of the uninhabited islands. You play as an unnamed man who is combing his area. We observe the events in the first person, there are no actions, arcade sections or solving puzzles.

The structure is linear. The main character, visiting the nearest places on the island, learns about its secrets and reads letters that are addressed to Esther, his wife, who died in a car accident. The narrator also mentions other people, such as Donnelly, who made a map of the island, and the shepherd Jacobson, who lived on the island in the eighteenth century..

Dear Esther doesn't explain everything to us. It depends on us how we combine the facts and how we make a final conclusion regarding the relationship between the island and the accident of Esther. The Chinese room can be repurposed, giving us access to new letter fragments.

Sites we visit include ruins of buildings, a wrecked ship or a cave, the walls of which are covered with drawings depicting chemical formulas, neurons and bacteria. The main character is accompanied by a "mysterious" figure in a "fight" that sometimes appears in the distance and disappears when he tries to approach her.
