Desktop Dungeons combines a puzzle game with a roguelike and a simple city-building simulator. Each run in this indie game lasts on average about 10 minutes (or less). Any dungeon fits within one screen. The sorties are not limited to catacombs alone. There are swamp, desert, ice and other locations. Almost all dungeons are randomly generated.

Desktop Dungeons has turn-based gameplay. The character appears on the map and begins to explore it. Initially, the entire zone is closed by the "fog of war". To win, you need to kill the boss and find a way out. However, you first need to level up. For each opening of an initially closed cell, the hero's health and mana are restored slightly. If you injure a monster and then heal in this way, then the enemy will also begin to regenerate HP. Opponents do not move, but they always hit first.

The gameplay is based on mathematics. Before striking a blow, the opponent has to calculate in his head who will inflict how much damage to whom and whether they will come out the winner. You also need to count the amount of experience gained for killing each type of monster, so this allows you to quickly increase levels. The enemies also have levels. In addition to adversaries, there are shops, gold, potions and artifacts, which allow you to deal more damage, break walls, change places with an enemy, etc..

After returning to the surface, the user rebuilds the settlement. Gradually, the village will turn into a fantasy town. The erected buildings open up access to new races, classes, terrain types, monsters and opportunities. For example, at one of the stages of the development of the village, it will become possible to equip your soldiers with one-time loot purchased at the local forge. There are 12 specializations in total. They can be roughly divided into 4 types: warriors, magicians, thieves and healers. When the user sends heroes to the dungeons, they will always have to be pumped again.
