If you approach an object that is of no value, the hero himself will say so. As for third -party characters, there are more than 30 of them, and each has a clearly spelled out character, manners and dialogue style. So, communicating with them, you can receive new information about the plot, or take quests and help people around. Traders, scientists, guests in taverns and other units will behave differently, so you can expect unexpected turns and turns of the plot.
