Horizon Forbidden West tells a gripping story full of familiar explosive combat against carefully crafted enemies. The action narrative takes place across multiple levels and explores the essence of the Horizon series, from the vines choking the remains of San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge to the beast-like artificial machines that roam the land following in the footsteps of their long-dead creators. Many confrontations will await the player along the way, with confrontations also taking place within Aloy, who herself is a complex mix of different lives. This is what drives the story and gives a personal touch to themes that might otherwise feel clunky if not handled with obvious care. The result is a fantastic open-world action adventure.And once again, Aloy carries out an urgent mission filled with mystery, not least in her character. This is not a short journey, and can take 30+ hours to complete. While there are still a decent amount of audio logs, their quality has improved significantly, and more importantly, this time around, all the key narrative moments are told through engaging cutscenes that contain their share of drama. It is also worth noting that Horizon Forbidden West is in many ways a sequel to Zero Dawn. This means that newcomers may feel slightly alienated by the overarching plot, although there is still plenty to enjoy.If the previous game was about Aloy discovering a new dangerous world. Then Forbidden West is a new world that has revealed just how dangerous Aloy can be, as in Zero Dawn she has become a living legend: worshiped by some, feared by others. The current political unrest between warring tribes paints a tense background with plenty of room for great moments that can be played out in front of them. There are also some truly standout missions: one quest line in which a clumsy but lovable inventor tries to fulfill his grandfather's ambitious legacy is a particular highlight. It's a great example of how the protagonist's adventures combine with other people's stories to create something truly memorable.
