Kayak Extreme was created by a group of enthusiastic amateurs out of love for the sport, not with commercial success in mind. The gameplay is simple. The player, fully equipped, descends to the bottom of the boat, pushes off from the shore and starts paddling. A three-dimensional computer simulator that allows you to imagine yourself as an athlete sitting in a kayak and descending mountain rivers. Kayak Extreme is controlled by the following keys:

• Right and left. Pressing corresponds to using the oars. To adjust the course, one or the other button must be pressed or held longer than usual.
• A. Causes the kayak to dive under water for a few seconds. This is necessary, for example, when overcoming any obstacles located low above the water surface (trees).
• Z. Allows the kayak to rotate 360 ​​degrees around its central axis. These maneuvers are intended not only for aesthetics, but also for bringing the vessel out of an uncontrolled skid and for passing special gates.
• Space. When activated, turbo mode is turned on for a short time. At the same time, the boat begins to rush rapidly along the current. This complicates hitting the gates in the riverbed through which you need to pass.

Descent along a mountain river involves passing through gates placed along the route. They are divided into two types. The first are green. They must be passed straight, that is, facing the finish. The second are red. These checkpoints must be overcome with your back to the finish. That is, before passing, you need to turn the kayak 180 degrees and thus continue moving. If the player for some reason misses the gate, then he is charged a penalty. All routes have a time limit.
