MediEvil is an adventure with elements of platformers and slashers. You will have to take on the role of Sir Daniel Fortesque, a deceased knight resurrected as a skeleton warrior to protect the fictional kingdom of Gallowmere from an evil sorcerer. The campaign unfolds across various levels, and each has specific goals that Sir Daniel must complete in order to progress. He owns an arsenal of weapons, ranging from swords and clubs for close combat to long-range crossbows. Many weapons can be charged for more powerful attacks, and some, like the baton, provide access to hidden areas. When unarmed, Sir Daniel can detach his arm and use it as a makeshift weapon for both melee and ranged attacks. He can use shields for defense, but their durability is limited and requires strategic use. Scattered throughout the levels are gargoyle heads: green ones provide information, while blue ones act as merchants, allowing Sir Daniel to purchase items and ammo using collected treasures.Sir Daniel's health is represented by a bar that decreases as he takes damage. Falling from great heights or drowning also results in his death. To expand his health pool, the hero must collect Life Bottles, which automatically replenish his health when they are depleted. Throughout the campaign, Life Vials and Life Fountains are also hidden, restoring health and replenishing empty Life Bottles. Each level contains a hidden Chalice of Souls. You can obtain them by defeating enough enemies (though some can be obtained in other ways). Notably, some enemies and friendly NPCs in certain levels do not yield souls. Completing a level with a Chalice in hand grants Sir Daniel access to the Hall of Heroes, where he receives rewards such as a new weapon. Gamers who manage to collect all the Chalices throughout the playthrough will receive the true ending.
