Mega Man X: Command Mission is a departure from the series' typical action platformer format, adopting a turn-based RPG style of play. Unlike its predecessors, there is no stage select feature, allowing stages to be completed in a predetermined order. The gameplay experience takes place on the battlefield and battle screen, with the character always positioned in the center of the view. A map of the surrounding area is displayed in the lower right corner of the screen, helping to navigate the stages. Users primarily control X, who is accompanied by various characters during battles. The narrative begins in the Central Tower, which serves as a hub where the party can rest before embarking on various stages of the adventure, which move the storyline forward. The completed stages of adventure can be reviewed, including those that are crucial for promoting the narrative. These missions are scattered throughout Giga City, and each requires permission to complete. Notably, adventure levels are often empty, with enemies appearing randomly throughout the level, a nod to traditional RPG mechanics. In addition to standard turn-based attacks, characters can access a hyper mode that enhances abilities for a limited number of turns. Once a team of three is formed, a Final Strike attack can be performed - a coordinated assault on enemies for a period of time.
