Metal Saga revolves around familiar RPG mechanics. Players move around a world map, encountering random enemies while traveling between points of interest. Towns offer opportunities to rest, repair vehicles, and engage in normal activities. Dungeons, usually caves or abandoned structures, are labyrinths with no auto-mapping function, making exploration difficult.Combat is based on a turn-based system with phased initiative, where characters on foot have different speeds compared to those in tanks. Canine companions act independently, attacking enemies randomly. Users choose actions for other characters from a limited pool, and each action often requires monetary costs, and not mana or skill points. Skills, although available, are less attractive due to the costs associated with them and limitations in tanks. In addition, changing equipment during combat is not possible, despite the fact that certain weapons are more effective against certain enemies. The gameplay involves exploring the world with random encounters with enemies, as well as getting into cities to rest, repair equipment and trade items.
