Neopets: The Darkest Faerie takes you to Neopia, a world inhabited by anthropomorphic versions of. The action takes place in a kingdom where a dark fairy, once imprisoned, seeks revenge on the land and its ruler. The campaign follows Thor, a farm boy turned knight, in his quest to save his homeland from the dark clutches of the Fae. The narrative begins with Thor's quest to become a knight in Meridell, training under the castle's master-at-arms. His journey takes a turn when an attempt to protect Illusen, an Earth fairy, ends in failure, leading to the city falling under the control of the Darkest Fairy. Untouched by the dark magic, Thor is forced to leave, but remains determined to free his homeland from the tyranny of the Fae. Gameplay introduces Thor and Roberta as playable characters. Thor uses a sword in combat, while Roberta uses magical attacks. Both have special abilities called motes, which enhance attacks with various effects, such as poisoning enemies or emitting a beam of light. However, their magical prowess decreases with use and is replenished by consuming purple jappies and various fruits or potions scattered throughout Neopia. Neopia holds many motes, helping Thor and Roberta in their fight against darkness. These motes, from Light and Sun to Darkness and Water, can be used for weapons, shields and armor, expanding the duo's abilities in their quest to restore light to the land.
