The hero in Outward is a simple traveler who does not have special skills or combat talents. At first, this is a simple guy, vulnerable and weak, who gradually masters survival skills, learns to resist the dangerous open world, as well as all living beings living in it. The game can be held in a cooperative. The protagonist wakes up virtually naked on the old pier, where there are a lot of fragments of broken ships. The guy gets up and starts looking for food on the pier, meeting a hermit along the way, who reveals to him the properties of the gameplay from the basis of the passage. The hero eats, dresses, explores the territory, and even meets characters who allow him to spend the night in a sleeping bag near a fire. After waking up, the guy realizes that he is in an unfamiliar village, the inhabitants of which give him a couple of days to pay for their hospitality. Here, time is given to complete tasks and it is counted down, so it is important to complete them on time, otherwise the tasks will become ineffective. After completing the first quest, a couple of NPCs leave the village and the gamer needs to make a choice which of them to follow, which determines the further development of the plot. The open game world is dangerous - here all living things are trying to kill the wanderer. Here, animals, robbers, birds of prey and insects attack, having sets of attacks, advantages and weaknesses; which can be set against each other to distract attention from the character. Missions are non-linear, and the user is able to explore the environment, find loot, craft items, fight, but experience comes in the process - there are no special tips. The protagonist can cook food by buying recipes and quench his thirst by filling a flask on the shore of a pond or drinking from it. The fights are intuitive - here the player uses each weapon, blocks blows with a shield, parries with a somersault, attacks with blows and casts spells. Each enemy has his own fighting style, but in general, opponents do not have a specific tactic.
