Perfect Tides revolves around a young girl, Mara Whitefish, who lives on a secluded island. The protagonist is a teenager and is going through all the hardships of a transitioning age. Her maiden room is a mess, reflecting her unstable inner world. She attends mainland school, where she has friends and enemies, spends a lot of time on the Internet, texting with strangers. Mara has a talent for writing, but even her own mother tells her daughter to get out more often, not hang out on the World Wide Web.

Throughout Perfect Tides, the protagonist is forced to move around and interact with the characters around her. She has fun and gets into trouble with a bunch of other teenagers, hangs out at a game club, dances, goes to sleepovers and even tries light drugs. She gets suitors who don't always behave delicately when alone. There is also a close friend who can always listen and even give practical advice. The gamer has to decide for the main character what to do and how to act - how to react to the laughter behind her back, how to deal with feelings of loneliness. How to behave in the company of others and how to communicate with relatives or townspeople on the mainland and the island.
