Phantom Dust combines a third-person shooter and elements of collectible cards, immersing you in the role of an esper who can manipulate the omnipresent dust to achieve combat mastery. In the role of an unnamed protagonist, gamers go through a combination of combat scenarios and non-combat battles, interacting with non-player characters, developing a strategy for their arsenal of skills (resembling maps) and starting missions leading to battles. NPC allies can optionally be recruited to assist in combat encounters. In combat, fighters use a variety of skills fueled by Aura, which builds up throughout the match. These skills, gained and activated using Aura points, range from offensive strikes to defensive maneuvers, healing abilities, and status-altering effects. As Aura is depleted by using skills, it is gradually replenished to its maximum capacity, maintained by collecting Aura particles scattered around the battlefield.Diverse in nature, Skills are divided into 5 Schools, each representing different damage types and effects, with their own strengths and weaknesses compared to other Schools. Skills are generally consumed upon use, though some have multiple charges or infinite durations. Strategic depth lies in managing a set of Skills to adapt to the evolving combat situation and exploit opponents' vulnerabilities.
