Shadow Hearts: Covenant immerses users in an RPG adventure, where they lead a group led by Karin Koenig or Yuri Hyuga. The campaign unfolds in two distinct parts: an initial linear story segment, followed by an expansive second half that allows for more detailed exploration of various cities and rural areas across Eurasia. During this journey, players collect items and equipment, interact with characters to complete quests and trades, and engage in both main and side quests. Battles, which occur as a result of random or programmed encounters, are based on a turn-based system, and are affected by the character's speed attribute. Each fighter has hit points, magic skill points, and sanity points. Managing these points is crucial, as losing sanity will result in a loss of control in battles. Actions range from normal attacks and special attacks for a specific character obtained through side quests, to assigning Crest magic and using items to heal and improve the character. After the battle, the heroes earn experience points to level up and improve their characteristics, and also acquire soul energy from defeated enemies, which is crucial for the development of the ward.
