The protagonist of Shantae: Half-Genie Hero, as before in the series, is the eponymous girl with genie powers. In battle, she deftly uses her own hair as a whip, and thanks to the magic of dance, she is able to transform into other creatures. Shante will use her skills against the pirate antagonist Risky Boots. At the beginning of the plot, she attacks the heroine's hometown, and eventually threatens the entire world, losing control over her own plans. The gameplay of the protagonist's adventures is presented as an action platformer with elements of Metroidvania. There is no longer a global map and connected locations, as in the previous parts. However, the same levels can be replayed after receiving new abilities to open previously blocked parts. In addition, they offer to play not only Shantae. The campaign is also provided for Risky Boots. As the game progresses, both heroines can improve their skills, must defeat similar bosses and generally follow the same plot line. This time, the genie heroine has 5 animal forms:
- Monkey. More agile and fast, able to climb obstacles.
- Elephant. Strong and massive, useful for destroying stones, doors and other obstacles in the way.
- Bat. Helps to fly over long gaps.
- Crab. Can maneuver underwater and overcome underwater obstacles.
- Mouse. Small enough to crawl through cracks and go through miniature labyrinths.
