Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga immerses players in the roles of Serf, Hit, Argilla, Gale and Cielo, and each of them has the ability to turn into a formidable demon during battles. These demon forms serve as the main mode of combat, with characters moving around large-scale environments, engaging in both random encounters and climactic boss battles. Experience points are earned after combat, shaping character abilities through the Mantra Grids system, where mantras are purchased with in-game currency and mastered with Atma points gained from defeated enemies. Character mastery is limited to eight learned abilities, with the ability to create enhanced combos when multiple characters use the same skill from four different categories: physical, magic, shield, and auto. A turn-based combat system is used, with three allied characters engaging in strategic combat. In accordance with the Press Turn system, both characters and enemies have a symbol indicating their turn, which allows you to make tactical losses to give the next character an action.Exploiting enemy weaknesses or dealing a critical hit gives an extra turn, while resisting results in a loss of a turn. In Digital Devil Saga 2, characters sometimes go into berserk mode, increasing attack power at the expense of magic skills and defense. In addition to demon forms, characters can engage in combat using normal weapons in their human forms, performing combos between both states. The magic system includes nine different attributes: ice and lightning potentially cause the status of freezing and stunning.
