Shinobi is a hack-and-slash game centered around the protagonist, who is armed with shurikens and ninjatos. A key move, the flip, is triggered by double-tapping the jump button while jumping, helping to reach elevated areas, perform acrobatic maneuvers, and use the shuriken-hedgehog attack against multiple opponents. The inclusion of running as a mechanic was introduced in Shinobi III, expanding the character's mobility. An integral part of the gameplay are the four magical ninjutsu attacks - Ikazuchi, Fushin, Kariu, and Mijin - which serve as either fatal blows to enemies or enhancements to the protagonist's abilities. The gameplay is distinguished by enemy artificial intelligence, where opponents demonstrate tactical maneuvers, for example, hiding behind obstacles to reload weapons or using shields to reflect the protagonist's shurikens. Each Shinobi level typically consists of two or three scenes, culminating in a fight with a fearsome boss. Environments range from bamboo forests and dojos to docks and industrial complexes teeming with grotesque creatures, providing a variety of intense encounters. Travel through bamboo forests, dojos, docks and industrial complexes. Perform somersaults to reach high ground and stunt jumps. Use four magical attacks - Ikazuchi, Fushin, Kariu and Mijin - to attack or upgrade.
