Tales of Destiny: Directors Cut uses an advanced version of the linear movement combat system presented in the first part. The combat takes place in a 2D plane, where characters and enemies engage in real-time action. Both melee and ranged attacks unfold in the moment, while spells take a casting time based on the spell's complexity. After a spell has finished casting, time pauses briefly to animate and distribute damage, acting as an interrupt. Special attacks, both melee and ranged, deal more damage but cost Tech Points (TP). An unconventional combat system incentivizes gaining bonus XP for stringing together combos of multiple attacks, creating a fast-paced, dynamic, and reaction-driven experience. Before battle begins, spells and special attacks can be assigned to buttons and directional combinations, change the party's battle formation, and define AI behavior patterns for computer-controlled allies. Some spells can be excluded from active use for AI allies. AI watches over characters that the gamer does not control directly, taking into account general strategic directives. Although direct control is limited to one character at a time, it is easy to switch between wards smoothly, allowing you to issue special orders for attacks or spells through the combat menu system. This system allows you to use items, spells or special attacks directly during combat.
