The Painscreek Killings is a game aimed at independently investigating a mysterious murder that occurred in the city. The walking simulator invites you to go on a leisurely exploration of an empty town, where the heroine gradually learns the truth about what happened. In the walker, the user can make their own notes that relate to the case. The protagonist is Janet, a journalist who is sent by the editor on a special case. The girl has to investigate the death of Vivian Roberts, the wife of the former mayor. The goal is to find out the reasons, circumstances and method of murder. The main feature of the game is that there are no other characters except the journalist, and information for the future article can be obtained from documents and newspapers found in the process, as well as diaries left by former residents of the abandoned city.In total, 15 characters take part in the process, each of whom could become a killer and has their own reasons and methods for this. The gamer chooses the point from which to begin his investigation, for example, from a hospital, a hotel or the mayor's mansion, where at the start you can find a lot of evidence. Each can be used as a hint leading in a certain direction and only towards the end the investigation becomes more linear.The Painscreek Murders emphasizes careful searching and inspection of locations, where you can always find an item or hint useful for progress. Here, you should first think about it, and then use the items you find, for example, having found keys, you should not immediately try to open all the locks with them - it is better to look nearby for possible hints or information to understand which door can be unlocked. Here, you need to find keys at each location to unlock the next one. The character is equipped with a journal, where the information found is recorded, maps, a flashlight, and a camera, with which you can take photos of rooms, codes, evidence.
