There is no such thing as subtlety in the world of Valfaris, a grim sci-fi realm where a grizzled warrior crashes his ship into an alien world, shooting, slashing, and headbanging anything that dares to move in the name of revenge and violence. The user will fire a shotgun at a red fog, collect weapons obsessively placed around the word Hell, and ride defeated bosses in the ultimate act of humiliation. Those expecting subtle storytelling and subtle subtext should look no further.Therion is the man of the hour, a long-haired destroyer clad in blood-red armor. His homeworld of Valfaris has reappeared in orbit around a dying star, but this once-impressive citadel has become an alien nightmare, and Therion suspects that his own father is involved in the mysterious tomfoolery that boils within. So he takes a wolf-shaped starship, lands on the surface like a late rock star, and begins slaughtering with mindless abandon. Following Slain's footsteps brings its own set of problems. Valfaris follows much of the same basic template - fighting your way through a series of pixelated levels and defeating a boss at the end of each - while adding new ideas and re-surfacing old problems. The player can collect tokens. Any tokens collected are saved between deaths, and the more they are collected without being used, the larger the health and spirit bars become. The player can use the following combat features:
- Improving melee skills against enemies.
- A set of swords are provided, with different stats.
- A magic action system.
- A huge number of weapons: machine guns, cannons, and bows.
