The action of Way of the Samurai takes place in 1878, an era marked by the decline of the Tokugawa shogunate and the beginning of the Meiji period. The events of the story unfold during the Satsuma Rebellion, a turbulent time when the once revered samurai found themselves on the sidelines. Players try on the role of Kenji, a drifting ronin, as the story begins at the fictional outpost of the Rokkotsu Pass. Rokkotsu Pass, a deserted village whose main attractions include a railroad crossing, a modest eatery, and an iron foundry. The pass becomes the scene of a power struggle between three different factions. The centralized government, armed with modern weapons such as firearms and cannons, seeks to assert its dominance after subduing local warlords. Meanwhile, the Kuro family, once influential in Rokkotsu Pass, resists government encroachment by resorting to extortion and intimidation. In search of funds, they consider selling the iron foundry to the government, causing tension with the Akadama clan, led by Tesshin Kuro's illegitimate son, Kitcho. This family clash intensifies as the Akadama clan tries to stop the Kuro family's deal and drive government troops out of the pass. During this struggle for power, the unfortunate village peasants bear the brunt of oppression, no matter which faction prevails in this complex and multifaceted story.
