Aliens Versus Predator: Extinction is a real-time strategy game that emphasizes squad management over base building and resource gathering. Each species has a unique resource used to summon or upgrade units, with different methods of creating units. Progress is based on completing specific tasks, from eliminating assigned enemies to completing missions such as repairing facilities. Starting conditions are often dependent on the development of events, with population caps varying across levels. Population costs vary significantly between species. Human units, represented by the US Colonial Marines, earn credits by destroying enemies and repairing atmospheric processors. These credits facilitate the upgrade or deployment of new units via Dropships, which deliver units to designated landing beacons. Marines specialize in mid- to long-range combat, complemented by support units that can perform actions other types cannot, such as healing. Predator units gather resources exclusively through combat, earning honor through the Honor system. As honor accumulates, more units become available for deployment via Drop Pods. Predators have the ability to self-heal and cloak, though both actions drain energy reserves.
