Close Combat: Cross of Iron is a real-time strategy game set on the Eastern Front during World War II. Missions cover events that actually took place in 1943-44. The player not only controls units, but also takes on the responsibilities of a young officer who must take care of the tactics and morale of his squad. Campaigns are available from the USSR and Germany. They consist of several consecutive maps. When winning, the player moves to the next map. And in case of defeat, he returns to the previous one. Moreover, traces of past battles remain on it, so that the entire campaign feels very holistic, and not like a disjointed set of missions. For each task, you need to buy units for special points. This is one of the most important stages of the game, since each task requires specially trained infantry or special equipment. For example, if you do not acquire heavy armor-piercing artillery, you can lose all your troops in a battle with a single Tiger. The game pays great attention to realism. For example, tanks are absolutely invulnerable to conventional firearms, and natural objects and houses can be used as shelters. Special attention is paid to the psychological component. Soldiers behave realistically on the battlefield depending on how events unfold. In addition, they need to be given a periodic rest, otherwise their combat performance will begin to rapidly decline. The officer controlled by the player can also participate in battles. His presence on the battlefield provides some advantages, but at the same time the risk increases, since the death of the officer means failure of the mission.
