.hack, .hack//Mutation Part 2 is based on the narrative embedded in its predecessor, Infection. The storyline follows the main characters, Kite and BlackRose, as they delve deeper into the mysterious secrets hidden within the virtual world of the World. Following RPG traditions, players engage in real-time combat against a variety of enemies. Accessing the menu pauses the session momentarily, allowing you to select spells, use items, or use skills. Kite, the main character, takes the lead, while the other characters act under the control of artificial intelligence. Users can guide these companions with general directions or issue direct commands, creating a dynamic experience. Introducing a signature ability known as Data Leak, allowing Kite to turn enemies trapped in magical portals into rare items. However, this power has to be paid for, since its use increases the level of infection of the hero, which leads to unpredictable side effects. Notably, boss monsters called Data Bugs possess corrupted data, giving them infinite health. To counter this, Data Drain restores corrupted data, exposing the monsters' vulnerabilities. However, defeating enemies without resorting to data drains becomes crucial to curing Kite's infection. In .hack//Mutation Part 2, combat only begins when the player's character approaches magical portals where hostile creatures reside. This strategic approach adds an element of anticipation and planning to the gameplay, ensuring that battles are both challenging and thoughtful.
