Makai Kingdom: Chronicles of the Sacred Tome is set in a world ruled by powerful beings known as Overlords, each of whom rules over their own pocket universe called Netherworlds - a recurring theme in the Disgaea series. The central character is Zetta, a brash Overlord who goes by the title of the Badass Overlord. He is accompanied by other important figures such as Pram, a young Overlord gifted with foresight, Alexander, a thunder-wielding God of Destruction who rivals Zetta, the Demon Lord Sidle, once a samurai, Salome the Betrayer, Zetta's former student, and Frenya, a mysterious girl with an enigmatic identity. The story begins with Pram's prophecy, predicting the doom of Zetta's Underworld. In response, Zetta sets out to quest into the Forbidden Library to prevent the impending doom. Here, he discovers the Sacred Tome, a mystical book with the power to shape reality. To his horror, a passage within predicts the fall of his Underworld due to his own foolishness. In a fit of rage, Zetta destroys the book, only to realize the self-fulfilling nature of prophecy. He quickly binds his soul to the Sacred Tome, setting out on a mission to rewrite his world. His strategy is to force the other Overlords to write their wishes on the pages of the Sacred Tome, a journey filled with intrigue and unforeseen consequences.
