Mega Man X7 introduces 3D gameplay alongside a traditional 2D style, a first for the series. Players initially control Maverick Hunter Zero and newcomer Axl. Both characters can be deployed at the same stage and switched at will. Unlocking X requires either rescuing 64 Reploids or defeating eight main bosses. Chips, once obtained, must be used immediately and cannot be disabled or transferred between characters.Once a character's reproducible chips reach maximum capacity, no further upgrades are possible. Auto-aim functionality is integrated for AXL and X, allowing you to lock onto enemies with the ability to easily switch targets. Zero lacks standard long-range attacks, but can deflect projectiles using his Z-Saber. X, unique to this release, has default air abilities and is fully charged with his Buster. Dr. Dr. Light's capsules return, allowing you to choose between a frost-less X or an armored version on the Select stage after completing a full set. Zero and X retain their typical weapons, while Axl introduces the Shot ability. Destroying certain enemy types with this technique yields a glowing red orb. If collected, the AKSL turns into a copy of the defeated enemy, inheriting its characteristics such as speed and weapons.
