Shining Tears is an action RPG where gameplay revolves around completing stages by defeating enemies. Failure occurs if the main character, Zion, is killed or if the player decides to flee. Like the Shining series, it is possible to level up and collect items by repeatedly restarting missions, engaging in combat, and collecting resources. Zion is accompanied by a partner character, mostly controlled by AI, but it is possible to take control at any time. Cooperative multiplayer allows a second participant to control the partner character in completed stages. Experience points are earned by defeating enemies, leading to character development with each level.
