State of Decay focuses on open world and fortified base survival in a zombie apocalypse setting. The game has a conditional plot, through the prism of which the atmosphere and interaction of the characters are revealed. The epidemic begins suddenly, covering the picturesque Trumbull Valley, where two friends are relaxing. Fighting off the surging monsters, Marcus and Ed casually rescue a woman named Maya Torres, who previously served in the US Army. The trio finds refuge near the Church of the Ascension, where a group of people has already gathered. Together with the survivors, the heroes build a temporary settlement and settle in there until enough information is collected about the scale and possible causes of the black fever.Before evacuating the valley, the friends and their new acquaintances will have to get used to the crisis situation. The community conducts reconnaissance of the surrounding area, looking for other camps, and trying to contact the military. The environment has become incredibly dangerous: the negligence of one person puts the entire base at risk, so the borders of the improvised fort need constant strengthening and defense.If there are resources, the base can be reoriented at any time to meet the urgent needs of the population. For example, equip a gym and a library where trainers who teach people from neighboring camps will improve their skills. To maintain the social structure, the player can switch between group members, choosing healthy, unoccupied and friendly companions for interaction with the active hero.
