Steam Prison is a traditional visual novel. After a catastrophic disaster, the world has become thoroughly stratified and divided. The story of Steam Prison begins in the Heights, a residential area that towers over the rest of the planet. The inhabitants of the Heights, often blissfully ignorant, spend their years looking at the Depths - a place on the surface of the planet where society sends its criminals. The inhabitants of the Heights consider the Depths a nightmare inhabited only by barbarians and criminals who do not follow the strict rules and regulations set by the Heights to prevent absolute chaos. But reality is not so clear-cut, and one girl faces this truth after a personal tragedy results in her being banished from the splendor of the Heights to a prison-sanctuary below.The protagonist Cyrus Tistella is a police officer with a strong sense of justice, who works hard to protect the people of the Heights alongside her pacifist partner, Fin. Life seems to be going well for Cyrus: she has passed her exam to become a police officer and has reluctantly begun preparing for the marriage her well-meaning parents are looking forward to. However, as the opening moments of the game show, everything around Cyrus falls apart when she loses her parents and is subsequently framed for their murder, becoming a criminal herself as she is exiled to the Depths she was raised to hate and fear. Alone and facing enormous challenges at every turn, Cyrus must not only learn to survive in the Depths, but also figure out who committed the murder and clear her name.The decisions the player makes make it feel like he has more influence on the game's plot. There are multiple routes and different endings in the game. There is also no story map, so you should make multiple saves at major branching points or use the Fast Forward option to scroll through text that has already been encountered before.
